About the GSL
Established in the 1960s, the Greater St. Louis Speech Association provides student workshops, coach professional development, and competition for all affiliated schools.
Each Fall, the GSL hosts a workshop open to all coaches and students. The workshop features varsity students from various schools demonstrating the various GSL Events in a relaxed environment; observing students and coaches are welcome to ask questions of the demonstrators at any time. The "student teaching student" dynamic makes the complex world of Speech & Debate approachable for new students.
Throughout the Fall and Spring, GSL offers a "three-part conference" in the form of speech & debate round robins. Each "GSL Tournament" (or segment) is held on its own weekend and consists of a speech-round robin and a debate-round robin. Traditionally, speech competitors have three rounds on Friday evenings and debate competitors have five rounds on Saturday. By the end of the conference, students in speech could potentially have NINE round of competition experience, and debaters could potentially have FIFTEEN rounds of competition experience.
Students can enter one, two, or all three segments of the conference.
At the end of "GSL 3" the conference awards are announced, recognizing school and individual competitive records from all three of the conference segments.
For new coaches, the most appealing aspect of GSL is the value: $100 per school covers all entries for the entire season!
